How to Build a Styling Routine That Works for You

Let’s be honest—figuring out what to wear every day can feel stressful, annoying, and bothersome. But building a solid styling routine? Now that can relieve a whole lot of that decision fatigue first thing in the morning. Because who wants to start their day off with any negativity? Whether you’re headed to the office, working from home, or trying to balance a social life somewhere between all of your other responsibilities, having a plan for your outfits saves time and helps you show up feeling like your best self.

So buckle up! I’m going to take you through a simple six-step styling routine to make getting dressed fun again!

Step 1: Check Your Calendar

It’s Sunday and you are doing your weekly reset. Add some time to think about what you’re going to wear to help prep yourself for the upcoming days. Start by asking yourself: What exactly do I have going on this week? Am I in meetings all week at the office? Am I working from home but need to be presentable on Zoom? How many gym sessions or appointments are there? Maybe a fun date night or book club in the evening? Knowing what you have going on helps you build outfits that match the vibe.

  • At the office? An oversized blazer with tailored trousers or a dress will keep things professional yet comfortable.

  • WFH? A cozy yet polished combo like leggings and a knit sweater.

  • A night out? Your favorite statement piece paired with one of your staple items to avoid any last-minute panic.

Your clothes should match your lifestyle, not complicate it.

Step 2: Check the Weather Forecast

No matter how stylish you are, you never want to be caught off guard by the weather. Take a quick look at what the week is going to look like, especially if you live in a climate where it can be one thing in the morning and the complete opposite in the afternoon.

  • Rain on the horizon? Break out the stylish trench as a layering piece and think about your water friendly shoes.

  • A scorcher outside but in the AC all day? Layer up with your favorite tee and cardigan to adapt as needed.

  • Blue skies and sunshine? Lightweight breathable fabrics like linen and cotton will be your best friend.

Step 3: Think About How You Want to Feel

This is where things get fun—what is the energy and vibe you want to bring to the day? More importantly than looking good; you want to feel good.

  • Need a confidence boost for a presentation? Go for your power outfit — whether that’s your signature color or signature suit.

  • Feeling low energy? Stick to those soft and cozy fabrics.

  • Want to impress on a first date? Wear something that makes you feel bold and like you’re most authentic self.

Step 4: Plan Your Outfits in Advance

Avoid the “I have nothing to wear…” mental spiral by planning some outfits ahead of time. Now, you don’t have to pick out every detail or even be married to the items that you pick out. But you do need to minimize the amount of time you’re staring at your ENTIRE wardrobe first thing in the morning. Having a few pieces already set out and ready to go will set you up for success.

Step 5: Don’t Sleep on Shoes and Accessories

*raising my own hand here as a consistent sleeper on accessories.

Jewelry, bags, and shoes really have the ability to be the cherry on top of any look. Even your favorite lounge set can be instantly elevated when paired with heels, chunky jewelry, and a structured bag.

  • For work? Keep it sleek and classic with matching sets and neutral shoes.

  • Casual days at home? A statement earring or bold colored shoes can take boring looks to something fun and playful.

Step 6: Stay Flexible

Life happens. Plans change. Your styling routine is meant to work for you, not against you. If something doesn’t go as planned, that’s fine! Pivot, make adjustments and don’t stress (yes, I know that’s easier said than done). You can always keep a backup “uniform” outfit on standby. And remember, fashion is flexible. What works one week, may not work the next and that is ok! Shake it off and keep moving forward.

Building a styling routine is not about being perfect — it’s about making your life easier and giving yourself the freedom to feel good in whatever you wear.
